4 Ways To Cut Heating Costs Without Sacrificing

1. Turn down your water heater - just a tad

There's no need to forgo hot water to save a little money. Most hot water heaters are set to about 140 degrees. Simply change the thermostat to 115-120 degrees and you may not find such a difference between the temperatures, but it can bring in solid savings.

2. Install an all-home humidifier

If you've ever lived in or visited the South, you know that humid air simply feels warmer. While not the least expensive option, it certainly is an effective one. However, it is very highly recommended to leave the installation to professionals.

3. Close attic vents and check the insulation

Be sure to close all attic vents in the Winter, and it may also be a good time to check for proper insulation. According to a study cited by the Department of Environmental Protection in Montgomery County, Maryland, increasing attic insulation from 2-3 inches to 8-14 inches (R30) can save $95-145 a year for every 1,200 square feet of ceiling area.

4. Use your drapes

Another simple way to save on energy costs is to use solar power to help heat your home. During the day, keep your drapes open wide to allow sunlight in to heat your home. Conversely, close the drapes in the evening to help insulate your windows and keep the heat in.
