4 Traits To Look For When You Buy Your Olympus Flash

Your off-camera Olympus Flash can greatly increase the style of your photographs. I personally use an Olympus E-510, but you might have another SLR, so swap out Olympus with the type of your SLR. I bought the Olympus Flash FL-50 a few years ago, and I quickly saw a huge improvement in my pictures. There was only one reason for this: off-camera flashes, such as my Olympus Flash, grant you creative versatility.

There are a lot of other flashes that you can attach to your DSLR. However, it is best to use the off-camera flash for your camera make. It may be more expensive, but it comes with properties that some cheapter flashes will not have. And if you really want to have better photographs, using an Olympus Flash with an Olympus camera is worth the extra cost.

So what characteristics should you look for when getting an Olympus Flash? There are a lot of styles of off-camera flashes, that it is quite difficult to know if what you have is what you want.

Here is a checklist of 4 traits that you can keep in mind.

1 - Dimensions: How big is your Olympus Flash?. In most cases, the heavier the camera flash the more powerful it is. This is extremely beneficial as it reaches longer distances. Unfortunately, this may make it more expensive. If you know for sure you will only shoot indoors, then you do not have use for a bright flash. But, if you want to use it in concert halls, then you will usually need a very strong Olympus Flash. Tiny flashes do exist, and these are easier to carry than the larger Olympus flashes, as they are quick to stuff in your pocket.

2 - Shutter Rating: What is the smallest shutter rate your camera flash will work at? The full picture frame must be exposed when the camera flash turns on. If your frame shutter speed is too fast, and your camera flash can not synchronize to it, then this does not happen, and your image will not expose properly. This is also a feature of the camera as well, so please make sure to match both of these properties up!

3 - Flexibility: What forms of controls do you enjoy? I enjoy being able to adjust everything manually, as this provides me added control, and because I find it fun. Make sure that you are aware of whether the flash is just entirely automated, or also has a manual option.

4 - Auto-focus: Does your flash come with infra-red? In extremely low light locations, your camera may have issues auto-focusing. Several cameras come with in built lighting, in the form of infra-red. Others don’t, and can be worth checking to find out if the camera flash you want to purchase has this functionality. My Olympus Flash has this, and is a godsend since my camera doesn’t.

If you keep these in mind, then the first camera flash you buy will be decent. And once you get extra experience with camera flashes, you can always upgrade.
