5 Beautiful Spring Perennials
1. Lupine Over 200 native species grow in the United States in mostly sandy or loose soils. Lupine has tall, colorful flower spikes and looks especially great planted in masses, either from seed or cuttings. Lupines will self-sow readily, although they don’t like dry conditions. 2. Day Lily The day lily is a low-maintenance flower and drought-tolerant. It likes nearly every type of soil and planting zone. Day lilies are particularly good if you have wildlife, providing blooms and attracting butterflies all season. 3. Phlox Phlox is an old-fashioned favorite that also attracts butterflies. You can choose towering plants or low-growing spreaders. Phlox is drought-tolerant and grows best in well-drained soil and partial to full sun. 4. Oriental Poppies One of the most adaptable varieties of poppies is the Oriental poppy, which has large, cup-shaped flowers. The Oriental poppy will die back in the heat of summer in some places, returning with cooler fall temperatures. 5. Primrose Another old-time favorite that attracts butterflies and hummingbirds. Plant primrose in a shady, moist location from seeds or transplants. The flowers can be very fragrant.
