5 Common Business Web Site Mistakes
1) Can’t figure out what the company does. Ever look at a Web site and you cannot figure out what a company does? That should be immediately obvious, whether it’s “We are organizational consultants”, “We make organic honey,” or “We groom dogs.” Don’t make people dig around on your site or guess! 2) All graphics. Many web sites are all graphics, including the text. If the text is part of the graphics, search engines cannot read it, and cannot send the site appropriate visitors! 3) No “title tag.” The title tag is what shows up in the upper left hand border of your browser window, and is one of the primary things that search engines consider to help decide what your web site is about. Often it will be something inane like “Home Page” or the name of the company. If you are, for example, “Molecular Implant Biology Experts” that’s what the title tag should say. It needs to be descriptive! 4) Difficult or impossible to find contact information. This can include an email, physical address, phone number and more. If people cannot get a hold of you, it is far less likely that they will do business with you. 5) Web site not looked at on multiple types of browsers. A web site may look great on Internet Explorer, but miserable on Firefox or Safari. A Web site really needs to be looked at with the very few main browsers at a minimum so you see what your customers will see. Handle these five things well, and you are far better than most Web sites out there today! Or course there is more to a great Web site than what we list here, but avoiding these 5 unfortunately common mistakes is certainly a first and significant step!
