5 Dieting Myths

You will stumble upon countless dieting myths while surfing the internet or reading a magazine. Everybody seems to have a different opinion when it comes to losing weight and dieting. You can easily be fooled by diets that appear great which in fact are very bad for you. Here are just 5 dieting myths than can create grave health problems:

1) Virgin olive oil has fewer calories than other cooking oils: far from being correct. All oils have almost the equivalent caloric contents in spite of their source: olives, sunflower seeds, nuts, peanuts, corn, soy...Virgin olive oil contains about 900 calories and it is made entirely of fats. What differentiates virgin olive oil form the other oils used in cooking is the fact that it is much healthier because it reduces the level of the unhealthy cholesterol and preserves the good cholesterol. You can also use olive oil to clean your mouth, keep your teeth white and make stronger your gums. All you have to do is keep a spoon full of virgin olive oil in your mouth.

2)Fish meat is less fatty than other types of meat:it is wide spread the idea that the fattiest fish meat that you can consume contains fewer fats than any low fat meat. This just isn't true. For example tuna contains 13 grams of fats per 100 grams while 100 grams of turkey meat contains merely 3 grams of fats. You should still eat fish even if it is fattier and contains more calories because the fats it contains are good nourishing fats. Fish contain omega 3 fats which help you prevent cardiovascular diseases.

3)You get overweight because of salt: Salt isn't fattening if you consume it alone, but it leads to water retention. On average you are eating about 10 grams of salt every day but your body only needs only 4 grams of salt per day. All those highly processed foods contain loads of salt. Only 2 grams of salt form the 10 grams you usually eat daily come form the food you cook at home. Now you don't need to stop eating anything salty. Your body needs salt to function properly and it has its own means of getting rid of all the excess salt you give it. If you eat salty foods you feel the need to drink lots of water. All that water helps you get rid of the excess salt found in your body without making you fatter. So salt is nonfattening.

4) The top source of vitamin C are lemons:From 100 grams of lemons you can get around 75 mg of vitamin C but there are vegetables and fruits that contain even more vitamin C. Some of them are cabbage, dill, blackberries and much more... Rose hips contain the largest quantity of vitamin C, especially their pulp which contains more than 200mg of vitamin C per 100 grams. Related to this myth is the belief that sour green fruits are rich in vitamin C. The truth is that the fruits that get lots of sun exposure and are ripe and sweet contain much more vitamin C than green sour fruits.

5) Frozen vegetables contain less vitamins and minerals than fresh vegetables: on the contrary. Frozen vegetables, because they are frozen rapidly after they are harvested, suffer a smaller amount of vitamin and mineral losses. On the other hand fresh fruits and vegetables are kept in crates days at a time until they reach the supermarket. In time they get damaged and start to rot which makes them lose vitamins and minerals at an accelerated pace. If you have a garden and you have just picked the fruits and vegetables you are eating the situation is very different then.
