5 Easy Tips For Inexpensive Summer Fun
• Creating an obstacle course with a baby pool or two and some buckets and washtubs, or a Slip and Slide. • Running timed heats to see who can navigate the course the quickest, get the wettest, or whatever contest idea creates the most giggles. • Borrowing your neighbors’ sprinklers to create a sprinkler tunnel for running through, crawling through, or even dancing through! • Stocking up on water balloons and squirt guns for some seriously saturating battles. Everyone will have fun, keep cool, and enjoy the day out of the house. 2. Take the kids to the park for a picnic. Make it special by allowing each picnic participant to select one favorite food they want to have as part of the meal. You may be surprised at how much you enjoy the eclectic mix of favorites. And, remember, one day with popcorn as an entrée and gummy worms as a fruit won’t really hurt. Enjoy! 3. Some starry, starry night, pack up the family and head out of town for some stargazing. Ideally a rural spot makes for grand gazing, but if you live in a city, head to the nearest option where lighting is reduced. Spread a blanket on the ground and lie back to watch the stars. You’ll create a memorable after dark adventure. You may be surprised at the conversation and closeness that emerges in starlight 4. Organize a bicycle decorating contest for the children on your street. Make it a contest rule that decorations must only consist of items they already have on hand – no shopping/purchasing allowed. Ask a neighbor with no children involved to serve as a judge. Using their imagination and resourcefulness to find and implement decorations is the long-term gain, but perhaps a $5-$10 grand prize might serve well in the short-term. 5. Ask some other moms to partner with you to have a weekly matinee day. At the appointed home for the week, the children gather to watch one or two child-friendly movies. The host mom has some simple refreshments and monitors the group, freeing the other moms up for 2-3 hours of “me” time. The more moms you can recruit, the greater frequency of “me” time segments and the fewer hosting responsibilities. Whatever you do this summer, remember to enjoy these precious days, because before you know it, they’ll be cruising down the street in cars rather than bikes.
