5 Free Attractions In Majorca You Need To Know About
Alcudia
Visit the wonderfully restored city of Alcudia which is built on the site of a Roman Settlement, with the remnants of Roman Houses and amphitheatre visible to the public eye. The maze of the narrow streets and the medieval architecture make the walled city a gem for tourists. Once the site of a Phoenician and Greek Settlements, the town was invaded by Romans in the 2nd century BC and renamed Pollentia. It was later sacked by the Vandals but returned to its former glories under the Moors. Alcudia translates as "The Town on the Hill", in Moorish and the current walls surrounding were constructed after the 14th century Spanish conquest.
As you enter the walls through the two town gates which are called the Portal de Moll, you will see two squared towers paired with two high palm trees which is the symbol of Alcudia. Top Things to see include the narrow streets at Carrer d'en Serra, and the walk from the Sant Jamue church, which will take you to the remains of Roman Houses at Pollentia, the well kept Roman Amphitheatre, and the Orator de Santa Anna, one of the oldest churches on Majorca.
The Fishing Village of Sóller
Take a visit to Sóller which is a charming town on the north west coast of Majorca, located 3km from the Puerto de Sóller. The historic village is famous for its ancient olive trees and orange groves and is certainly worth visiting. Located just about a half an hour from Palma airport, the town is a free tourist attraction out on its own – with its location the unique selling point! The wonderful valley and its stunning mountain range the Serra de Tramuntana is a much savoured destination by tourists who enjoy walking, nature, swimming in an uncrowded, peaceful and rustic area away from the commercial resorts such as Magaluf and Palma. Take the tram to Puerto Sóller and enjoy the calm breeze as the wooden train whittles along, and you can take your pick of the orange and lemons that grow on the trees along the tramlines. The little fishing village of Puerto de Sóller is an attraction in itself, and you can view the fishing boats and learn all about the life of a small fisherman.
Museo d'Art Espanyol Contemporani
Take a visit to Palma’s most renowned art gallery, la Museo d'Art Espanyol Contemporani which contains respected works by the Foundation of Juan March. Housed in a magnificently restored mansion on the Carrer Sant Miguel, the marvellous collections also have some wonderful modern works of art including work from esteemed artists Miro, Dali, Picasso, Antoni Tapies and Juan Gris.
The Banys Arabs (Arab Baths) of Palma
The 10th century baths at Palma are nearly all that is left remaining of the Arab city of Medina Mayurqa. Historians reckon that they were more than likely part of the home of an Arab nobleman. The tepidarium section has a half oranged shaped dome, with shafts giving room for sunlight, which is carried by a dozen columns. It is assumed that the columns were saved from the ruins of Roman buildings that were sacked by the Vandal invasions.
Visit the Beaches of Majorca
Not only is a visit to the beach free of charge, you will get a tan and some relaxation for good measure! The island is well known for its wonderful choice of sandy beaches. To the north of the island, check out Alcudia or Puerto Pollensa with lovely calm waters. To the west, you will find Magaluf and Palma Nova. To the east you cannot find a better beach than Sa Coma with its white sand and wonderful array of watersports. If you prefer the peace and quiet, then the smaller coves at Cala Bona and Cala d’Or are just for you! South Majorca’s best beaches are Cala Mondrago and S’Amarador.
