5 Simple Ways To Settle A Newborn Baby.
1) Providing a safe sleeping environment By providing a safe sleeping environment you are not only ensuring that your child feels safe, secure and comfortable enough to get a good night s sleep but also reducing the risk of Sudden Infant death Syndrome (SIDS). Such things to help provide a safe sleeping environment include: Providing a firm crib mattress that fits snug into a safe crib with spaces no more than two fingers wide. Not placing the baby crib near windows (this also prevents the possibility of strangulation due to low hanging blind and curtain cords) Do not place under heater or air conditioner vents. Your baby’s nursery should be around 16degress-20degress to prevent over and under heating. (This also will reduce the risk of SIDS) Do not smoke in near or around your baby and your baby’s nursery. 2) Create the right mood. Have you ever tried to sleep with loud music or with the blinds open? Well your baby requires similar sleep conditions as you, so when it comes to creating the right mood reflect back upon what you do and do not like. Some things to consider are: Have the blinds/curtains fully drawn at night and only partially during their afternoon nap. This helps them to distinguish between day and night. Play soft, gentle background music so that your baby doesn’t feel alone and will settle with the nice calm relaxing music. Be sure that your baby is not interrupted while trying to go to sleep. Keep everyone out of the nursery until they are fully asleep-close the nursery door if need be. 3) Create a bed time routine. This is best started from day 1. It will help your baby know it is time for bed and babies love repetition, which is the same thing every night. Bed time routines will vary between families but some suggestions for a bedtime routine could be: Bath-bottle-song-bed Bottle-story-song-bed And so forth. Make sure that this routine is done every night (of course if you are not home it may not be possible but do try to do the parts of the routine that you can do) Don’t forget to tell babysitters or any others that care for your baby to follow this routine. 4) Make sure your baby’s tummy is full otherwise they will be unsettled and won’t go to sleep or will sleep but wake up several hours later for a feed. The longer your baby sleeps in between feeds the better it will be for everyone including baby. 5) Provide a comforter. This does not necessarily mean a pacifier; this could be a blanket with a silk trim. These types of blankets are very popular with young babies and will last for years unlike pacifiers. Other comforters may also include a teddy, a small cotton cloth that has your scent on it or a small cushion. All these things if your child finds comforting to have around will provide the essential need for security that your child has been looking for thus in return will help to settle and soothe your baby at night. Your baby may also find comfort in been swaddled. (Wrapped tightly) this can be done using a swaddle blanket specially designed for easy wrapping or you can opt for a normal baby blanket folded to make a swaddle.
