When planning a trip to a foreign country and/or area one of the first things you need to do is check your passport and make sure it is current and meets the requirements to where you are traveling.
If you don’t have a passport you need to get that issue taken care of immediately and check all the requirements for using a passport in the area you are planning to travel to. Many people think just because they have a passport everything is all taken care of, but what is so today is that there are now different regulations for different areas/countries.
How long does it take to get a passport? Normally it takes three to six weeks from the time you have applied, there is an express service, but that only shaves off a couple weeks. So the best thing is to just get your passport taken care of now, and that can even be one of your New Year resolutions.
Did you know that some countries require passports to be valid up to six months before your arrival? So this is going back to my statement previously, just having a passport does not always take care of the situation. Just get your passport now and then at least it is in process, but be sure always to check with where you are going, to find out the regulations for them.
Another item that can be a requirement is that some countries/areas do not accept dog-eared or damaged, even slightly damaged passports. So once again check the requirements and get a passport pouch or case to put it in and this will keep it clean and tidy. They now have airline ticket and passport cases that you can wear around your neck; which are very convenient and keeps all these papers very handy and rather hands free.
Here is something else that you may not be aware of and should know, you want a passport book not just a passport card. The difference between these two forms is that the card allows you to take a boat or walk across borders, but you can’t use them to fly with. You need a passport book to be able to fly to different countries/areas.
To get your passport for the first time you are required to appear in person at an application office; however, when you get a renewal you can do this by mail, but your passport cannot be damaged, stolen or expired and it also needs to be issued within a period of 15 years.
