Hertfordshire is a non metropolitan county in the eastern portion of the country of England. Hertfordshire has a population of just over 1 million people, which makes it the 14th largest ceremonial county in England. Hertfordshire is located rather close to the city of London, which makes it a Home County. Hertforshire borders other Home Counties that include Greater London and Essex. While the county may not be that large, there are still several great things to do in Hertfordshire.

Natural History Museum at Tring

The Natural History Museum at Tring was established in 1889, and receives over 100,000 visitors each year. The museum houses only stuffed birds, insects, mammals and reptiles. Before they were a part of the museum, all of the items were in the personal collection of Lionel Walter. The Natural History Museum at Tring is renowned as one of the best museums in England because of all of extinct and hybrid animals on display. Some of the rare animals include the great auk, dodo bird and quagga.

Therfield Heath

Therfield Heath is a nature reserve that is located just outside of the city of Therfield, Hertfordshire. Therfield Heath is a great place to relax and enjoy the nature in a beautiful setting. There will be no need to go to the hotel or find one of the spas in Hertfordshire after visiting Therfield Heath. The heath is known for its birdwatching and it is also a common grazing spot for wild sheep.

Royston Cave

The Royston Cave is a man-made cave and is known for its medieval carvings on the walls. The cave is very small and is only 5 meters in diameter. Nobody knows the actual origins of Royston Cave, which allows many people to make up their own story about the cave. This ultimately adds to the appeal of the cave. Royston Cave is available to the public every Saturday and Sunday during the summer months.

Berkhamsted Castle

The Berkhamsted Castle is a ruined castled that was built in 1066. The castle is made entirely of stone and is surrounded by a mote. The Berkhamsted Castle is very important piece in English history because of all of the members of royal family that have lived there. Tours of the ruins of Berkhamsted Castle are available to the public every day for free.

Royal National Rose Society Gardens

The Royal National Rose Society Gardens in one of the most beautiful places found in Hertfordshire. The gardens display a variety of different types of roses and planting styles. There are currently over 8000 roses on display from over 2500 different varieties.
