5 Tips For Making The Best Cup Of Coffee At Work

Sometimes it seems as though we spend most of our lives at work, and many people find that coffee is the perfect way to get them through a hard working day. However sometimes the quality of the work coffee leaves something to be desired! Here are some top tips to ensure you get the best beverage possible to keep you perked at work:

1. Keep it clean
The best coffee needs to start with a clean slate, and by that we mean clean equipment. That obviously starts with clean cups and spoons, but if you're using a coffee machine you need to ensure it is thoroughly cleaned and rinsed regularly so that you don't get a build up of nasty, bitter coffee residue or leftover cleaning product. If you're using a really fancy coffee machine with freshly roasted coffee beans, you need to be especially careful as the natural oils from the beans will build up and leave a nasty residue.

2. Use enough coffee
Very few people like a really weak coffee – if it doesn't provide that wonderful coffee bouquet then it's not a good cup of coffee! You can always weaken coffee with milk but it's far harder to make it stronger, so don't scrimp on the beans or the instant granules. If you are using beans but don't use enough the beans will be 'overworked' and overextracted, and can result in a nasty bitter taste. Avoid!

3. Think about the water
The quality of the water you use can have a big impact upon the quality of your coffee. Hard or soft water areas can result in vastly different coffee flavours, and water that's been in a kettle with limescale for hours upon hours if not going to provide you with the best coffee experience. Ideally use filtered water that is fresh in the kettle or coffee machine, or filtered direct from the water supply.

4. Not boiling hot!
The best coffee is made using water just off the boil – too hot and it will scaled the coffee beans or granules and over extract the coffee flavour, often resulting in a bitter taste. This is even more true with coffee beans, as the excessive heat can damage the natural oils from the beans. Yes it will be a little cooler, but ensure you also don't try to reheat your coffee – that only further deteriorates the flavour.

5. Don't overbrew
Most coffee-making mistakes result in a bitter flavour, and overbrewing is no exception. If you leave your coffee to sit for too long it will over-extract and impede the natural flavour. The ideal brewing time will depend upon how you make you coffee – machines are often pre-set for brewing time, especially capsule based coffee machines, however if it's directly into a cup it's all in your hands! It will also depend on the type of coffee you are making – espresso should be just under 30 seconds while cafetieres need around 3 minutes. Filter coffee should only take a few minutes if you've selected the right grind and filter size.

So to get the most from your coffee enjoy it fresh and straight away!
