6 Ways To Overcome Inertia And Get Started On Your Paper

Paper writing can be difficult. Everyone struggles with motivation from time to time and sometimes life gets in the way being as efficient as we would all like to be. And while the best paper writing strategy is to start as soon as possible the following tips can help people regardless of their deadline.

1) Eliminate clutter- Having a work space littered with magazines, photographs, bills, or letters can be distracting. When writing a paper it is important that you can give the topic your full attention without thinking about other items on your to do list. This means eliminating both mental and physical clutter is crucial!

2) Write a list of points you want to make in the paper, include quotes you want to use. The list will give you direction and help you progress with your paper. Also, it will help ward off writers block or if you start to get off task as you’re writing you can go back to the list and remember where you were going.

3) Eliminate distractions- Turn off the TV, turn off the music as they’re not going to help you; they’re just going to draw your attention away from your paper. Background noise may make the time seem like its going faster, but think of how much faster you could work without having to share your attention between your assignment and the TV or music. Chances are you would be much more efficient and productive.

4) Schedule time to write- Limited time makes you produce more, think back to the standardized tests in middle school and high school. Set goals in that scheduled time if you have an hour to sit down tell yourself you’re going to get through the introduction and first 2 paragraphs. Don’t obsess about getting them perfect yet. Use these sessions to get a lot of material out you can trim any excess off later in editing.

5) Be organized- Have all the materials in front of you when you sit down to write so you don’t waste time looking for your notes, the assignment sheet, or the books you’re drawing information from. Make the most of the time you have to write. Some simple organization can make all the difference!

6) The first draft- There is still some value in writing a first draft on notebook paper. Doing this reduces the time you spend on the computer writing, and eliminates the temptation to go online or instant message friends instead of getting your work done. When you’re writing that first draft it may also be useful to turn your phone off and to not sit in front of a window. An advantage of having a handwritten first draft is that you can work on it anywhere, waiting in the lobby at the doctor’s office, on the bus, on a work break, and if the computer loses all or part of your paper while you’re typing it you have the handwritten draft to start over with.
