60 Second Stress Reducing Alternatives To Prescription Drugs

Since the dawn of creation, humanity has had to deal with stressful stimuli. From the demands of the world around an individual, to one's own inner demons, stress comes in a wide variety of flavors. And, it goes without saying, that a stressful existence in today's modern society can have adverse effects on a person's abilities to cope with everyday life. While not all stress is negative, it becomes imperative to find the sources of these potentially harmful mental weights. Good health should be your goal.
Recently I read an interesting column by "The You Docs," Drs. Oz and Roizen. I find it amazing that they can come up with multiple ways, several times a week, to help others lessen their stress and increase their health.
The article that struck me was about achieving good health "in 60 seconds." Not only did this sound profoundly unbelievable, but over-simplistic. Yet here are the key points you need to keep upper-most in your mind, and go from stressed out to feeling good:
1. Deep Breathing
When a person is stressed, breathing - deep breathing - can be a quick 60 second cure. Nitric oxide, which is a powerful blood vessel dilator, begins in your nose and travels to your lungs. It actually helps your lungs function properly. Said doctors call it "a mini meditation." By breathing deeply you reduce your stress and you can actually keep yourself from aging faster.
As a note of my own, I would also like you to be aware of the "7 minute breath." Under stress, we often forget, or inhibit ourselves, from taking that naturally occurring deep breath. This deep breath does come in a timely fashion - about every 7 minutes. Most of the time we are totally unaware that we are even deep breathing. However, as stress builds in your body, what you do become aware of is your inability TO get that much needed deep breathing. Relax.
2. Don't Forget Your Gums
If you have not heard of periodontal disease by now you either do not own a television set or read a magazine or look at ads even on the internet. However, flossing truly is another 60 second health regime you must work into your daily schedule. Under stress, aging may very well be accelerated. Yet the simple, 60 second act of time for dental hygiene can actually reduce your "real age."
3. Detergents
Seriously, what we wash our clothes in can impact our health. The ads for nontoxic, biodegradable dishwasher soaps make sense not only environmentally, but physically. The list of additives in "regular" soaps can go so far as to actually change the gender of fish (yes feminize fish in water we humans dump our waste into). Better health through a cleaner cleaning process, such a simple way to improve the way you feel.
4. DHA and EPA
Fish oil containing at least 600 mg of DHA a day is a healthy, recommended dose. If you are stressed, fish oil can actually boost your brain, heart, and mood. It also has the potential to keep you slimmer which is a given when it comes to better health. Aim for 2,000 mg of DHA and EPA a day for full effect.
5. Snogging
Yes, believe it or not, smooching your significant other, your kids, even Fido or Sparky (not on the lips LOL), is a great way to reduce stress. The natural endorphins released are instant "feel good" ingredients your body has built in. Be happier and healthier by getting closer to the ones you love, it will make a big difference.
While I have paraphrased "Health help can happen in 60 seconds," it goes without saying that today's society could easily be classified as having too much of a good thing. Greater technology brings instant gratification - both positive and negative. While many might long for the days of old, when news traveled slower, there is no getting away from the fact that we carry around great amounts of tension and stress.
Finding alternative methods to prescription drugs and trips to the hospital or doctor's office must become a priority for us. With natural alternatives, we can reduce stress and increase our personal health. Enjoy!
