An SD card is not often something we think of as a typical gift and there are many reasons for this. The first reason for this is the simple fact that an SD card is not very big, and that makes it feel like an ungenerous gift. This doesn't give someone a large present to unwrap and doesn't look particularly big or impressive under the tree.

However at the same time as we all know – good things come in small packages. Actually an SD card can be a very generous gift if it is a large one – a 64GB Compact Flash card is actually a fairly generous gift to give and people will assume that they were fairly expensive (though it is possible to get even a 64GB compact flash card relatively cheaply). At the same time, even if it doesn't look like the biggest gift on the table, it will nevertheless be one of the most used and most useful and that is what really matters when giving a gift – whether it will make the recipient happy, not whether it inflates your ego and makes you feel highly generous.

Herein actually lies another great thing about giving an SD card as a gift – it's highly versatile. You can give an SD card to anyone because they range in price so much meaning that it can be a very generous big present for someone you are close to, or a small token gift for someone you don't know as well.

Furthermore they're perfect as gifts as you won't risk giving them something they already own or can't use. Everyone can use an SD card and actually the more you have the better. If you already have a 64GB compact flash, then you will find it still occasionally gets filled up. If you give someone another one, then they can take this with them say on holiday for their camera as a backup, and that will mean that they don't need to feel like they're constantly avoiding taking pictures for fear of wasting all their space.

At the same time hundreds of different gadgets use flash cards for storage – from mobile phones, to cameras, to MP3 players, to computers to anything else under the sun. This then means that you can give someone a card and they can swap it for smaller ones in their other devices that are perhaps still behind in the memory stakes – chances are that few people will have a separate SD card for each and every one of their gadgets that's 64GB.

This is also a highly practical gift that will get a lot of use. It's permanent unlike a bottle of wine, and unlike an ornament it doesn't take up any space. They'll use it almost every day though if it's in their phone, or if it's in their camera, and this will ensure that they are constantly grateful to you for giving them such a helpful present. As an added bonus, why not give the SD card along with a gadget such as a camera to sweeten the deal?
