1. Grapevine is one of the most adaptable plants in the world. It can grow anywhere regardless of the environment. You can even grow grapes in your own backyard.
2. There are five thousands of grape varieties and hybrids to choose from. It is very important to find out which grape variety will grow successfully in your area otherwise your hard work will be worthless.
3. The length of the growing season is a key factor as to which grape variety you need to grow. For example, if you live in an area where the growing season is short, you are only limited to the hybrid grape varieties to get the best result possible. If the growing season is long, you need to breed a different variety. A growing season is the average number of frost free days in the region where you live.
4. The type of soil and the climate have a tremendous impact on the taste of your grape or wine. Just because you grow the same variety as someone who is living in France or Germany, does not mean that your grape and wine are going to taste the same.
5. Ninety nine percent of the world’s wine comes from the Vitis vinifera species. Within this species, there are hundreds of cultivars that vary in their characteristics. Vitis vinifera is so desirable because of its tight and thick skin which gives wine its fragrance or aroma. Although the Vitis vinifera species is native to Europe and East or Central Asia, it can be found anywhere in the world. Another grape species is known as the Vistis labrusca; it’s mainly found in the Americas, namely Canada and the United States.
6. Seventy one percent of the world’s grapes are used to make wine. The remaining is used to make other foods such as dry fruit, jelly, vinegar, candy, grape seed extract, seed oil, and jam.
7. The secret to grape growing is to grow seeded grapes. Unlike seeded grapes seedless grapes have not been bred with disease-resistant as a priority.
