7 Tips To Ensure The Safety Of Your Home

A homeowner's first basic step in ensuring the safety of the house is to acquire a quality alarm system. But what if you already have a system, and are concerned about what other steps you can take to keep yourself, your family, and your property safe? If you are worried, it is not a groundless fear. The FBI's crime statistics show that this year, of every six homes, one will be the target of burglary. To avoid joining that statistic, you can follow these seven tips and gain the comfort of security.

1. Never open the front door of your house without identifying the caller and determining his or her purpose in knocking. Some burglars will knock or ring the doorbell just to gauge any response from the house before breaking in.

2. Always lock your windows and doors. This might appear to be a common sense precaution, but one overlooked entry into your house is all it takes to give a burglar easy access. Seventy percent of burglars get into houses using forced entry, which means that thirty percent found an unlocked opening.

3. Establish contact with your neighbors and build good relationships with them. Good neighbors are another line of defense for your home, as they will keep an eye out while you are absent. Offer to do the same for them and develop a secure neighborhood.

4. Lighting is not just decorative. Homes that remain dark for several nights in a row signal to burglars that nobody is home and the time is perfect to break in. An inexpensive light timer, used every day, will not only discourage opportunistic thieves but will also make any unusual activity easier to spot.

5. Consider a home safe to protect your valuables. Make sure the safe is fireproof to offer protection against both biggest threats to your possessions. Also ensure that it is not easily removed from your house, which simply bundles your valuable items in one convenient location.

6. Make a record of your valuable possessions, either with photographs or on video, and keep duplicates in a safe deposit box or in a safe. This is important for insurance purposes should a burglar intrude despite your best efforts. Another safeguard is to engrave the number of your driver's license into such important items as laptop computers and television sets as proof to pawn shops that you are the true owner.

7. If you have been hesitating about investing in a good home security system, wait no longer! It is still one of the most reliable routes to protecting your house. SimpliSafe is one excellent defense against you being the victim of a burglary.
