7 Ways The Experts Use Speed Reading

Speed Reading is more than just about speed. More than anything it involves skills that can be learned. You need to develop that skill in order to increase your comprehension and understanding when reading. It begins with having the appropriate environment and knowing the proper posture. This is needed to make the (speed) reading activity more comfortable and enjoyable.

Develop the right skills in speed reading. It is important to realize that learning the skill can be very beneficial not only to increase your speed when reading but ultimately to make it possible for you to have a pleasant experience when doing it.

Here are seven helpful tips that experts suggests to develop speed reading:

1. Use a Pointer

Whenever we're reading our eyes frequently make brief twitches to gather information. This takes away our focus from the reading material. Oftentimes when our eyes make these movements we find it difficult to locate the last word or sentence we were reading. This negatively influences your speed.

We cannot prevent our eyes from constantly roaming. What we can do instead is to use a pointer that serves as a guide. The easiest pointer is the tip of our finger or any other marker that we can place below a line of the text. Having this makes it much easier to bring your focus back on the reading material. As you become more comfortable with the motion it will be much easier for you to read more effectively.

2. Learn to Control

As mentioned earlier speed reading is not entirely about gaining speed but rather it's more of controlling our reading rate. The ability to control your speed makes it possible for you to become an efficient reader. The beauty is that your reading comprehension is not sacrificed

3. Avoid Sub-vocalizing

Although in some cases this can be useful it is important to minimize sub-vocalizing (or hearing the words in your mind). Doing this helps you to gain greater speed when reading

4. Be Active When Reading

Speed reading requires active reading. It's necessary to develop the habit of smart-reading wherein you learn to become inquisitive with regards the reading material. Determine when to stop reading to take time for reflection or contemplation about the subject matter. This practice allows your brain to notice relevant details to make better understanding.

5. Know When to Slow Down

When you are reading (very) fast, you should also know when to slow down in order to keep the right comprehension. In connection with controlling your speed is the need to slow down your space. Do this with important and/or confusing reading material.

6. Find Interest in the Material

It is vital to make your reading material interesting enough for you to stay focused while reading. Especially for boring subjects, this is something difficult but not impossible. After all it's a matter of attitude.

7. Practice!

Speed reading is a skill that cannot be acquired overnight. It takes lots of practice to learn and apply the skill effectively. Though the efforts may be great the rewards are even greater.

Use these 7 tips to increase your reading speed. Especially take special notice of the last one. You need to read more in order to learn how to read faster!
