Architectural mapping involves creating lighting for the exterior of a building, whether it be an office, an apartment complex, a hotel tower or a single family home. Recently, several high profile, extremely complex light shows have brought newfound attention for architectural mapping. These light shows involve a complex system of light fixtures, computers and so forth. However, you can create a simpler version for your own home for holidays such as Halloween, Christmas or New Year’s and be the talk of the town.

Major companies today are even using architectural mapping and light shows to create large-scale advertisements on the sides of buildings. You can find examples of this everywhere on the internet and major companies, such as Coca-Cola and Google have used this type of lighting display. Advanced versions of architectural mapping involve using combination of a digital camera that photographs and computer programs to help measure the facades of buildings. The photographs are typically used to create a 3D rendering or model of the building, so that scenes or light shows can be fitted to the facade. In short, the facade of the building is literally an empty canvas just waiting to be painted.

High quality cameras can be expensive, as can these computer programs. However, it is possible to hire a professional to do this process for you. For lesser advanced architectural mapping, you can use a tape measure. Generally, it is sufficient for the average single family homes to be mapped out using a tape measure, though it can be extremely time consuming.

Once you’ve mapped out the facade of your home, you’ll need to purchase the appropriate light fixtures. When doing so, purchase light fixtures that are safe for outdoor use. Creating a light show can involve architectural lights or Christmas lights, depending on what type of show you are looking to create. If you are looking to project images onto your home’s facade be sure to purchase the appropriate projector that is specifically designed for outdoor use. Look for keywords such as super-bright projection.

Though architectural mapping for lighting is typically for larger scale events and can be extremely time consuming, there is no reason not to attempt this feat on your own. If you’re successful, you’ll be envied by many.
