A Brief Guide To Cooking Yams

Sweet potatoes are referred to as yams in the United States. The two tubers i.e. yam and sweet potato are actually dissimilar. Despite the tubers being different, they are prepared in comparable fashion. Yams contain vitamins An and C, lots of fiber and minerals such as beta carotene, potassium and iron. There are several ways that you can use to prepare yams such as baking, mashing or using the microwave. Generally, most Americans do not consume yellow vegetables in their diets, a situation which can be reversed by eating yams. Yams were brought to Europe by one Christopher Columbus as they are native to Asia, central & South America and Africa. These tubers are widely grown in the south pacific, Africa and southern Asia due to their warm climates where they are grown extensively. For those who wish to learn how to cook yams, you will need several things to pull this off. These items include:Olive oil, Nutmeg, Low fat milk, Potato masher, Nonstick spray, Knife, Butter, Cinnamon, Casserole dish.

Baking is a great way to prepare yams as it is rather straightforward. Here is how to bake yams. Take the yams and wash them well using a vegetable brush. Pierce the yams with a sharp fork or knife. It is important to pierce the yams as they tend to explode if they do not get an outlet for the steam that builds up inside. Ensure that you have the oven attain a heat threshold of 375 degrees Fahrenheit and proceed to bake the yams for approximately 40 or so minutes. After this period, the yams will be ready to serve and they will have a wrinkly appearance to their skin. Serve the yams with a spread of butter or a dash of cinnamon for a lovely taste and flavor.

The following recipe is another interesting way to come up with baked yams. Get several yams maybe 4 or 5 and peel them. The size of the yams should be perfect for casserole cooking. Slice them thinly. Spray your casserole dish with some non stick spray. Into the casserole dish, place several slices of yam till you come up with a layer. Using butter or some other good spread, dot the yam layer. Get some walnuts that have been broken and sprinkle on top of the yams together with some cinnamons. Add some more yam layers and then take some honey and drizzle it on the top layer. Cover up the dish that you want to bake with and get the oven going at 375 degrees Fahrenheit and then bake your prepared yams for a period of 40 minutes. When the 40 minutes elapse, the yams will most certainly be tender after which you are advised to get rid of the lid of the casserole dish and take it to the broiler for some 5 minutes or so till the yams turn brown. After the yams brown up, they are ready for serving. You can have them with your favorite stew. Quite a simple recipe to prepare don't you think.
