BioToi portable toilets have been heralded by many as a product that can help to transform camping trips. I thought I'd take a closer look at what all the fuss is about. This article is a review of the product, complete with observations and analysis.
To begin with, let's take a look at what the BioToi is and why there's felt to be a need for it. It is a compact toilet solution - it folds to make it small enough to transport easily. This is, in itself, seen as a key selling point.
It's not simply compact though - it's also environmentally friendly. By using a selection of biodegradable bags it ensures that it can be used without harming the environment.
So was this product designed to fill an existing gap in the market? It certainly seems like the manufacturers think so.
Picture the scene: you're on a camping holiday and wake up in the middle of the night. You know that there are toilets provided at the site because you used them earlier in the day. Unfortunately, they weren't clean and looked distinctly unhygienic.
You're now desperate to use the toilet but the facilities are on the other side of a muddy field. Does this sound appealing? Probably not. It's the sort of scene that's enough to put many people off going on camping trips at all.
Wouldn't it be simpler if there was an alternative? The BioToi is there to provide such an alternative - you have your own toilet facilities with you, thus saving you the walk across that field and the nasty conditions that you may find at the toilet block.
So why are they making such a big deal of the fact that the Biotoi system is environmentally friendly? One significant reason must be that so many other camping toilets on the market make use of chemicals. Being able to avoid such chemicals can only be a good thing.
One factor that was pleasantly surprising about the BioToi was that it was extremely strong. This is obviously important and wasn't necessarily obvious from photographs that I'd seen online.
It's clear that this innovative product would be useful in many circumstances. There are obvious options available for its use on camping trips, but it could also be used in other situations, such as when attending festivals.
There are a number of retailers selling the BioToi online here in the UK.
