You may have had heard of the New York company Sckoon clothing, but not sure about what they really offer, so it's worth a little comparison with others...
There are 2 main comparisons to make, firstly with the material used and secondly with the method of production.
Sckoon clothing uses 100% organic cotton.
This means the cotton is grown without chemicals, and is hand harvested.
This is a very different process to the factory methods used by most cotton manufacture, and it makes the finished product smoother to the touch - great for all clothes but particularly for baby clothes.
Also, one effect of using organic cotton is that it feels softer the more you wash it - that is certainly different to processed cotton, which feel rougher after washing unless extreme delicate care is taken.
As for the difference in the actual production, it's worthwhile noting that the workers come under the Fair Trade banner.
This means that rather than just getting a flat wage, which may not be that high, part of the wages are invested back into projects that benefit the whole communities, to help them stand up for themselves in the long term.
That's not just a gesture by the company, it's an obligation if you want to use the Fair Trade banner.
It takes a fair amount of risk to use only 100% organic cotton and use Fair Trade worker policy, because if the consumer market is not prepared to stand the extra cost, the whole idea does not work. For the consumer it's just another option, but the stakes are high for the company.
What's happened with Sckoon though, is that the idea *has* taken off - it's become trendy thanks to some great publicity, and the concepts are now seemingly acceptable to the mainstream and not just the 'eco-friendly' brigade.
