A Cyclist’s Buyer’s Guide

Have you gone searching on the web attempting to find a particular item? Have you felt deluged with all the information you receive? Well, I am going to do my best to provide you with a guide as to where to find a good deal on any kind of cycling equipment.

There are a number of places to look for a bargain. This article is going to be split into three main sections according to the main ways of finding a bargain. Here are the three main topics or areas. For the first two topics I am referring to being able to find them either by going online or to the retailer itself.

1. Local retailers
2. Big box retailers
3. Auction sites

For the local retailer these are the people who have anywhere from one store to several stores with in a town/city or neighboring towns/cities. Sometimes these businesses have a web presence yet not all of them do.

You can find bargains at these retailers usually around the changing of seasons or changing of model years. If you are a good enough customer or built a good relationship with the manager or owner you can get deals through out the year.

Big box retailers are the big national/international chain stores. These stores can sometimes provide you a deal over the local guys due to their purchasing power. Sometimes you can get a bargain here if you shop during the season changes or model year changes. I have seen discounts as good as 60 – 75% at big box retailers particularly on bikes.

My favorite place to buy things any time is on auction sites. There is a trick to auction sites though.

Auction sites are similar to search engines. What I mean by this is when you enter a broad word, such as sunglasses, you get large amounts of listings back. This can seem over whelming. When you get a large amount of listings back you should enter a more specific keyword, such as Oakley sunglasses. Doing this will focus your search and get you more specific and relevant listings.

Another thing about auction sites you should remember is the majority of things you see listed do not have shipping included in the price. It is not uncommon to see high shipping costs on products, so beware. Not all items listed are new. If you insist on having a new item auction sites might not be for you.

The key to not paying too much for a product on an auction site is to: first be patient and second is to find out what the same item will go for in a regular store, including shipping. Some people pay more for an item than you can get it in the store for. I have seen it happen quite often.

In conclusion always shop around before purchasing. Do not believe auction sites can give you the best deal always. When shopping online figure out what you are willing to pay, including shipping, before you go shopping.
