A Fertility Consultant Explores: Fertility Monitor

A fertility monitor is a handheld device that will indicate just when you are fertile and when you are not. Because there only a handful of days in each month that you can become pregnant, timing intercourse is important. Research shows that using an at-home fertility monitor can significantly improve the odds of a quicker conception.

A fertility monitor may only test your urine, or it may factor in additional information, such as BBT testing or saliva. In general, a fertility monitor works by detecting the increase in LH (or "LH surge") which takes place directly prior to ovulation. It also tests for the increase in estrogen which rises more gradually as you approach peak fertility

If you use natural family planning methods, using a fertility monitor may be able to help you avoid pregnancy. A fertility monitor works best in women who have regular 27-35 day menstrual cycles. More irregular cycles may make it difficult to pinpoint ovulation.
