A Fertility Consultant Explores: Low Sperm Count

Having a low sperm count, also called oligospermia is one cause of male infertility.
A low sperm count can be caused by a number of different factors, including:

Smoking,

Excessive alcohol intake.

Over exertion physically and mentally

Zinc deficiency

Anabolic steroid use

Ways to increase your sperm count include: exercising regularly, eating nutritious food that's low in fat, and high in protein, vegetables, and whole grains. Reduce caffeine intake.

Avoid heating of testicles - Wear loose, cotton boxer shorts, Avoid hot baths and saunas. Don’t drink much - alcohol affects your liver function, which, in turn, causes a dramatic rise in estrogen levels. Even two drinks a day will have long-term effects on sperm production.

Having a low sperm count does not mean, however, that it will be impossible to father a child, just that it may take a little extra assistance. A reproductive urologist is medical specialist who has special expertise in working with men with low sperm count.
