A Hero In Our Midst

Portable fire extinguishers put out dozens of fires in the workplace and other areas each year and these successes are in the news daily. However, portable fire extinguishers are effective only if people learn when and how to use them.

The Fire Equipment Manufacturers' Association recommends that you only use a fire extinguisher on small, contained fires after the fire department has been called and everyone has been safely evacuated.


There are four simple steps to using a fire extinguisher, easily remembered by PASS: Pull the Pin, Aim at the base of the fire, Squeeze the lever, and Sweep back and forth.
