A Look At Some Of The Biggest Motocross Competitions

Football has its Superbowl, and baseball has its World Series, but the sport of motocross also has its high level competitions, in which the best o the best vie for big prizes and the chance to be recognized as the best by their peers and the public. One of the appeals of motocross is that the sport is easy to break into, with junior leagues and even competitions for young children. To compete at the highest levels, however, requires not only that competitors be superior riders but superior athletes as well. Those who are able to successfully compete at the major competitions are incredible riders and excellent all around athletes as well.


The outdoor series for motocross competition, also known as the AMA Motocross Championship, features a season that runs from early May through the middle of September. The circuit consists of 12 rounds, held at a dozen major motocross tracks throughout the United States. Each competition features two classes – a Motocross class and a Motocross Lite class, and each class runs for 30 minutes plus two laps.

Those motorcycle enthusiasts who make their home in Europe compete in the Grand Prix, also known as the Motocross World Championship. Although most of the races are held on the continent, there are also competitions as far away as Indonesia, South Africa, Japan and Australia. The two classes in Grand Prix competition are known as MX1 and MX2, similar to the Motocross and Motocross Lite classes of American competition. The duration of the classes is slightly longer in the European version, with races running 35 minutes plus two laps. The overall series is longer as well, incorporating 16 rounds instead of 12.

So no matter what part of the world you happen to call home, there is a motocross circuit for you. Whether your aspiration is to win the World Series of motocross or just to have some fun, motocross is a great sport for young and old alike.
