A Portrait Painting Genius

Portrait painting is having its 20th Century heyday and an American woman artist living on this Italian island is cashing in on three continents. The figures are back with art, the artist pointed out, having started her career as an abstract painter. Focus is being put on human appearance.

More and more universities, hospitals, and industries are requesting for the portraits of their presidents and board chairmen to be painted on canvas rather than photographed. The ancestry and wealth of the rich and famous are symbolized by these portraits.

Her brush has traveled to Europe, the United States, and Africa where her husband used to head the African operation for an American cosmetics firm. Though she has a studio where she can do her painting, she often does the painting at the home of her subject.

Around three weeks are needed for the artist to complete the painting of one portrait in a studio. Working on location would turn those three weeks of painting into only five days. Whether she paints at home, on an estate, or on a farm, the quality of her painting gets affected. Often, she eats with the subject and observes the home in which the portrait will be hung.

An actress quite will known was fascinated by the portrait and used it as a cover for her autobiography. Other clients that the artist has had are the members of the family who owns the five and dime fortune, the maker of tire and rubber, and the makers of a famous line of greeting cards. A Dominican monk, as well as a tribal chief from Nigeria, commissioned this artist to make portraits of themselves too. She could not believe where commission was coming from once her portraits became so popular world wide.

She rarely flatters her subjects, but her paintings of them are done in such a flattering light. Use of costume is negotiated. Subjects would usually go for their favorite clothes or their university robes, and the artist abides by their wishes. What she wants as a costume is an informal dress. Her subjects are given advice on the makeup to use and are instructed to make their hairdos at least a day old.

She engages in conversation with her subjects while painting. She keeps their lips moving, so she can catch that going into a smile look. Feelings of boredom are obviously seen in a portrait. After looking at her work in a book of photographs, clients can then choose what pose they want and how much of themselves they want to see in the portrait.

Another popular way of doing sketches is using ink, oil, or tempera in sepia tones. Sometimes, many sketches of the person are done on canvas, but the most detailed one she leaves in the foreground. The product looks like a page from a sketch book. It was in a two woman show she had with her sister 20 years ago that this woman started her career through a gallery owner who insisted on displaying a self portrait of the artist. It was the hit of the show.
