A Recession-proof Approach To Your Finances

Recession. Recession. Recession. This seems to be the financial buzzword of the month. In writing about personal finance, debt reduction, and ways to increase your savings, it has become increasingly important for Americans to understand how to guard themselves against any potential downturn in the economy. Obviously, there are no guarantees in life. But you can take some steps to help mitigate your losses during any upcoming financial turbulence.

Clean Up Your Finances If we are heading into a recession, it is time to get serious about your financial health. You should look at your monthly budget and start cleaning things up. Decrease your debt. Find friendlier lines of credit. Increase your cash savings and grow that emergency fund. Reduce unnecessary expenses. Cancel unused memberships. Take the appropriate steps to safeguard against being financially strapped.

Focus On Your Financial Plan If you have a one, five, and ten year financial plan, then focus on it and tweak it to meet your needs. If you have not yet developed one, then it is certainly time to get started.

Make Yourself Invaluable at Work... It is important to make yourself invaluable at work to do what you can to guard against layoffs. Granted, sometimes these announcements come without much warning and without much compassion as to who gets let go. If you can increase your role at work, do so.

...And Figure Out A Way to Make More Money Maybe it is now time to think about the ways that you can further supplement your income. This may come in the form of getting a second job or obtaining other part-time work that will increase your overall bottom line.

Think Ahead Above all, remember that "this too shall pass." Think towards the future and learn from the past. I remember when we were all in a panic in the early 1990s. Perhaps, too many of us have forgotten the lessons learned.

Although there is no way to completely protect yourself from any potential dip in economic growth, there are ways to make sure that you can survive this period with as little difficulty as possible.
