Proverbs are timeless words of wisdom that practically everyone hears about. This is why you probably heard the saying, “never look a gift horse in the mouth.” This particular proverb really applies to the holiday season. It is once again that time of year to exchange gifts and celebrate. You must try to keep this proverb in mind as you start unwrapping Christmas presents this coming Christmas. It is not entirely about dental hygiene.

This proverb dates back to 400 AD. It was actually said by Saint Jerome. During this time, the best gifts were always something useful. A horse, back then, was actually useful. It was an animal used for transportation, farming, hunting, recreation and trade. Now why should anyone look at a horse’s mouth? The answer is quite simple. You can actually tell how old or valuable a horse is by looking at its mouth. The main reason why Saint Jerome said that was to remind people to be grateful for even receiving a horse as a gift. This coming holiday season, we may or we may not get the presents we actually want, but that shouldn’t matter. What matters is that the person actually made an effort to give you something. It can, at times, be disappointing to see your gift exchanged for something else or sold off. Still, you must remind yourself that at least, you gave something. However, if you do want to get presents as valuable or useful as a horse in the past, it is not so difficult to actually do so.

You can choose to give more meaningful and fun gifts that a person will actually keep for life. A good example would be a voodoo doll for someone who recently broke up with their boyfriend or someone who recently got divorced. It is both funny and meaningful. If you are thinking of gift ideas for someone who really loves cats, you should think of getting a remote to control a cat. There really is such a thing. However, it might not make all cats listen. It can still be a fun and unique gift for that person. Nowadays, people tend to simply buy items that they actually need. This is why gifts that come with a sense of humor or fun will always be appreciated. As long as you take into consideration what person likes, enjoys and dislikes, you can actually find them great gifts.
