A Self Help Guide To Sexing Your Hamster

Hamsters are cute and cuddly creatures that can bring joy and love to any household, and if you’re thinking about getting more than one it can bring even more fun and laughter to you and yours. However, if you dont find out the gender of your hamster, you wont be smiling for long. After all, if your little tenants get busy loving, it can result in a slew of unwanted small little creatures, and pretty soon your shelter will look like a little-critter free-love commune instead of a happy home for you and your pets. So if you own more than one hamster or you’re thinking about getting another hamster to add to your current one, determining the sex of our animal is something you’ve got to do. Yet going to the vet to get this done may seem like an unnecessary expense, and determining your hamster’s gender on your own can be a bit tricky. So here is a simple step guide to determining the sex of your favorite household rodent.

You should gently hold the hamster on its back to look at the stomach. One way to do this is to gently cup our hand over it and gently turn it over to place it on its back.It is also acceptable to hold the hamster by its scruff. Holding the hamster slightly upright as if standing it up is one of the best ways to determine if the testicles are present.

You will also want to check the anogenital distance. The anogential distance is the distance between the anus and genitals. The distance between the anus and the genitals in small on femals than it is on males. In fact, it can be a bit hard to dertmine the distance in females as with males it is quite evident. Other easy ways to determine gender of male and female hamsters are to look at the nipples. While females do have nipples, the males dont. Also, the rear end of females tend to be less elongated than those on males.

It is critical to seperate your rodents right away if you discover a gender difference unless you plan to breed them. If you find that there is a difference in the sex of your hamster, a good solution is to place them in two seperate hamster cages. This will prevent a possible pregnancy fiasco that will result in a huge problem for you.
