A Skilled Society

Dancing is a very ancient human activity. All over the world people from all kinds of cultures dance, to express feelings, convey messages or tell stories. Some dances are for ceremonial or religious purposes, others just for entertainment or personal enjoyment. Most people enjoy dancing, even those who lack the confidence to dance on a night out tend to like having a dance when they are on their own or just with friends or family. There are some people who feel driven to dance and aim to become as skilled as possible at their chosen dance, embracing all the elements of becoming as good as they can be.

The diversity of talents in people is incredible; there are those who have an amazing musical or artistic ability, creating pieces that can be appreciated by wide audiences. Others have scientific or mathematical minds, or an understanding of technology or mechanics. The combination of skills across communities allow people to work together to keep society running. Some have a real gift for entertaining and their performances help others to forget their real life troubles for a while. A lot of people watch shows on television, especially now the Credit Crunch has everyone being extra careful with their money. Dance programmes and displays that are broadcast on television are definitely enjoyable, and as TV technology improves image quality, dazzling dances can be appreciated better on screen than ever. To really appreciate a dance, it is still best to go and see it performed live.

Watching dancers and their incredible moves can be breathtaking and inspirational. It is worthwhile noticing what performers are wearing, a lot of thought goes into outfits for shows, and if you dance yourself, seeing the kinds of dance shoes that professionals wear can be educational. This care for dance shoes does not start when on stage, a good pointe, tap, jazz or ballet shoe is designed for optimum performance from the outset. Manufacturers of dance shoes recognise the importance of understanding both dancers and the demands of dance itself. Shoes need to be practical, flexible and strong. They need to allow a dancer as much comfort and support as possible, without inhibiting the ability to achieve moves. For those who are just starting out, dance schools and tutors can often advise on which dance shoes are best suited to their classes, even recommending brands and specific designs.

For some people an inner drive quickly leads them to achieve goals, whether for a business career, as an artist or a number of other ambitions. Sadly, some people with great talent are not so lucky and circumstances mean they are unable to follow their dreams. The increasing popularity of talent shows like ‘Pop Idol’ or ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ demonstrates that people from all kinds of walks of life appreciate being given an opportunity to shine (or just to get on TV!). The story of Susan Boyle, who was the runner up in Britain’s Got talent this year, is one of someone who never gave up on their ambition.
