A Sophisticated Storage Stool (part Two)

Assembly

With a woodworking adhesive, glue the handles onto the side rails and cramp them. Let the adhesive dry. Glue and screw the legs to the side rails. Make sure that the distances X and Y are the same. Check that the 4.7mm. overlap where the side rail projects into the housing is even all the way down the rail. Let the glue jointing the side rails to the legs dry.

Next, trail assemble the side rail, legs and handle and the front and back rail. Check that they fit together well. Take the components apart, apply adhesive and re-assemble them. Cramp the assembly and measure the diagonals to check that the assembly is square.

When the adhesive has dried, plane off any slight overlap at the ends of the side rails or on the handles. Be careful when planning end grain as you can easily damage the corners of the timber. Polish the end grain.

The Lid

The lid of the storage stools consist of a plywood panel, hinged to the stool frame. Sapele edging strip is glued to the edges of this panel. A second plywood panel is covered with foam and fabric and leather. This is then screwed to the first panel, through its bottom surface.

Cut the two panels that make the lid to size. Take the lower panel and square the edges. Glue a length of 6mm. sapele edging strip to the short sides of the panel. When the adhesive dries, trim the edging to the required size. Then apply edging strip to the two long edges. Clean up and polish the edging strip when the glue has dried.

The next step is to fit concealed cabinet hinges to the bottom panel of the lid and to the back of the stool. The hinges used are ‘Wood fit’ hinges. You will need a 35mm. “Sharper Craft” boring bit to fit this hinges. Full instructions on fitting these hinges are supplied by the manufacturer.

The top panel of the lid can now be upholstered-it was to cut to size earlier. A rebate plane, fitted with a 3mm. blade.

The panel is covered with a 25mm. layer of reconstituted foam-this gives a fairly firm finish. The foam is then covered with material of your choice. Leather gives an opulent look but any other hard wearing material will do. The material is laid over the foam, pleated at the corners and turned under where it is tacked with 9.5mm. upholsterers’ tacks. It is important to tack the covering material securely as it will undergo a good deal of stress.

Drill holes through the lower panel near the corners of 19mm. No. 6 countersunk screws. Drill holes in the underside of the upholstered panel also Screw the upholstered panel to the lower panel.

The next step is to cover the underside of the lid material that matches the top. It can be the same material as the top or a cheaper sort--this surface does not incur wear. Fix the material with gimp pins.

The base of the stool

The final step in making the stool is to fit a base panel near the bottom edges of the four rails. To do this, screw lengths of 13mm. x 13mm. timber to the inner surface of the rails. Position them so that one edge is flush with the bottom edge of the rails. The plywood panel is simply pinned to these supports. Then cover the panel with a material that matches that used on the lid.

Polished the stool with the wax polish and fit metal domes of silences to the leg ends. You now have an attractive piece of furniture that gives safe place to store treasured possessions.
