A Strategic Plan For Finding Lost Dogs

Anyone who has lost a loved pet understands the initial feelings of panic that set in. Lost dogs are common and there are many tips to follow that have proven effective at recovering these pets. As long as a dog owner follows this plan, chances are much higher that they will safely bring their beloved companion back home.

Don't rely on your dog returning on their own. While many lost dogs do wander back home eventually, it is best to become active right away to increase your chances of finding your pet. Lost dogs who are micro-chipped can be scanned by shelters and other organizations. If your dog is micro-chipped, contact your provider and let them know that your dog is missing.

Search your neighborhood. Don't hesitate to ask neighbors to keep their eye out for your dog. Most people have pets of their own and will be happy to assist you in your search. Ask your family members and friends to spread out and walk different areas in your neighborhood while calling out your dog's name.

If you still have not found your dog at this point, it is time to become more aggressive in your search. Create posters with a picture and description of your dog. Include contact information. Post these flyers around your neighborhood on utility poles and other noticeable areas. Dogs can wander long distances in a short period of time, so posting flyers several miles from your home will help.

If there is a park that you take your dog to on a regular basis, go there. Ask other dog owners at the park to keep an eye out for your dog. Be sure to leave a business card or a piece of paper with your contact information on it. Dog owners will often be more than willing to spread the word about your missing dog.

The most important thing to remember is to not give up hope. There have been lost dogs who have been missing for several months before they are reunited with their families. Continue to check with shelters, humane societies, animal rescues, veterinary clinics and other organizations that may have information about your dog. Always leave contact information and a flyer with your dog's information. Don't forget to include any distinguishing marks. If your dog has become dirty and has not been brushed in a while, their picture may no longer resemble them. Any noticeable scars or unique coloring patterns will help in the identification process.
