A Surprising Requirement Of Leadership
Both my husband and I have worked for people who considered themselves leaders but exhibited behavior better described as authoritarian and dictatorial. It wasn’t pleasant working with these people but it did allow us to frame the way we want to exhibit leadership. Leaders come from a place of service. They act more as a coach. They have authentic concern for the growth and well-being of the people they lead. Their joy comes from the success of the people they are mentoring. I have heard from other distributors in my business that the relationship with new distributors is a little bit like parenting. You provide your new distributor with unconditional love, guidance and support. As the distributor becomes stronger and knows many of the basics, you allow a little bit more independence. While allowing independence you will still be available to help at any time. This continues for several weeks. After the distributor is trained and fully independent you will still be available if needed. In my business, we had a recent Saturday training from distributors that had never trained before. They are a married couple in their late 70s. She was a member of a religious order before they married. She taught in disadvantaged neighborhoods after being married and leaving the order. In addition, she started running marathons when she was in her 50s. She now helps the homeless. I believe he was a counselor for drug and alcohol dependence. During the training the subject of leadership came up. She said that on the way to the meeting she told her husband that she was going to “act” like a leader even though she is not yet a leader. I found this very surprising in that I absolutely feel that they are both leaders. And, many others can learn from their example of leadership. If you are not considering a business, you may want to know that these businesses can be life expanding. You meet people from all walks of life. They may have different backgrounds and experiences but what you have in common is that you all care for people. At a time of year when people can feel blue and lonely, there is a group of warm-hearted people waiting to welcome you. The world needs what you have to offer. So, step out of your box. Take a look at what is available. The information is free. There is absolutely no obligation. It is up to you. Are you up to it?
