A Trip To A Shoe Store

Like many bargain hunters, I tend to buy my shoes on the Internet. That's because I know that the best deals are often to be found online. But I am aware that traditional shoe stores do still exist.

I thought it might be interesting to take a trip to one such store. I hadn't done so in quite some years, so I thought it might be interesting to see how times have changed. I wondered how popular such stores still were. Who would I find shopping here?

Last week, I wandered down my local high street looking for just such a shop. I was surprised to see that many were still in business. It's clear that some consumers do still choose to shop in such locations.

So what were my first impressions? Well, as I approached the shop it seemed to me that little had changed in the past decade or so. The sale items could still be found displayed on temporary shelving either side of the entrance.

Once I entered the shop, it became clear that not much had changed inside either. The shoes were still displayed in rows on the shelves. There was only ever one shoe of each pair on display. This means that you are forced to get the attention of a shop assistant in order to try on a complete pair.

This can be annoying, although I must say that I was quite impressed by the level of customer service. Although the shop was not particularly busy, I could see that a number of other customers also appreciated this personal touch.

One aspect of the visit that I did find to be quite frustrating, however, was the inability to quickly compare prices with other retailers. This meant that it was very difficult to know whether the shoes were competitively priced.

This is a clear disadvantage when compared to shopping online.

If you want to compare prices more easily than you really need to be using Internet retailers. But if you're looking for that personal touch then it's clear that high street stores still have their place.
