A Watch That Does More Than Just Tell Time

Anyone who is athletic like me needs more than the average watch, even for everyday wear. I love the features of a chronograph timepiece because in addition to telling time, it serves as a stopwatch. Chronographs were made in pocket watch form starting in the 18th century. However, it took about 100 years for them to become popular.

Cartier is one watchmaker that creates chronograph versions of some of its timepieces. The extra large Santos chronograph watch comes with a steel or pink gold case designed by expert craftsmen. As a celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Santos line, this watch is as great as I expected it to be. It is well worth the price I paid for it last year, due to its stylish appearance and useful functions. I know this watch will be on my wrist for years.

The 18-karat pink gold bezel features chronograph functions and the case and crown are satined titanium coated with ADLC. What I like best about this watch is its black watch dial and gold chronograph dials. Roman numeral features in pink gold and pinkish steel hands with a phosphorescent coating make this watch more attractive than other chronographs. A fabric strap means I do not worry about wearing this watch while at the beach. With a 330-foot water resistance, I do wear it there, even when I go in the water. This watch seems to handle all I throw at it.

Automatic winding means I do not need to remind myself to set this watch. The calibration stays incredibly accurate, though I would expect nothing less of Cartier. Pink gold is used in the chronograph pushbuttons, making me confident that no matter how hard I push, these buttons will not chip or break. Trust me, I push these a lot because I wear this watch to the gym.

Date display is another great feature for someone like me who is always forgetting what day it is. Between that and the hour, minute, and second aspect of the chronograph, I really do not know how I live without this watch. Whether I am running sprints or taking a bike ride, I can time my workouts down to the second. This means no more being late for dinner, which is something my wife appreciates.

Finding this watch was an accident and of course, sports were involved. I was on a skydiving trip with some buddies in Wailua, Hawaii. What an experience, freefalling from 13,000 feet through the clear, blue sky, with the island of Oahu beneath me. I could see the infamous Pearl Harbor to my southeast and to Diamond Head beyond it.

During our free time one day, we headed to the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center in Honolulu. It was there that I found this priceless watch and made one of the best purchases of my life. My wife did not even balk at the price when I got home because she knows I will be at the table for dinner. I cannot even tell you how many meals I would have missed without it.
