A Wet Bed - Just How Serious Is The Bedwetting Problem?

Sometimes, there can be a lot of expectations which surround a child who makes a wet bed. Many people expect that after potty training has been completed, any prior issues with bedwetting should stop – but this is not the case, with many people not knowing that for some, wetting the bed can be an issue past the ages of four and five and into puberty.

Now, this doesn’t mean to say that a wet bed at the ages of four and five is common – 15% of children who are this age do wet the bed on a frequent basis. Going into later years though, it can be seen that as age increases, the statistics around bed wetting slow down somewhat, with as many as 10% wetting the bed at the age of seven and 3% still wetting the bed by age ten.

It is not to say that a child still bedwetting at age 10 is a lost case, as many can continue to outgrow bedwetting if they are doing so at an unusual age.

Even though there can be many causes, it is believed that genetics could play a part in some instances. For example, if one parent wet the bed at night when they were a child, there is a 44% chance of the child doing so also until an unusual age. If both parents wet the bed at an early age, this statistic increases to 77%.

Some kids struggle with the frustrating prospect that they wet the bed, past the ages of four and five and into puberty, in some cases. One of the key things to note is that such children are not alone as the statistics can be surprisingly high. Consulting your doctor can help you to take the appropriate measures to try and reduce the frequency of a bedwetting problem or eliminate it once and for all.
