A Worthy Goal For America

To achieve such goals, the government will have to give much help; yet it cannot be left solely to the government. Often, in fact, the people may well have to lead the government. Through it all, the goal must ever be kept before the eyes of the nation. It is a tremendous task. Thirty years are all too few in which to accomplish all that must be achieved. That is why this year, the one hundred and seventieth anniversary, is a good time to begin; it is a time for those who have long since begun, to set a definite time and a definite goal. There will be many obstacles, many doubters. There may even be those who will say that, with the atomic bomb and other inventions, it is useless to plan as many as thirty years ahead; the country may be destroyed; the United States may be so change as to be difficult to recognize.

Yet it is only by focusing on the future that we can live at all. Everyone who receives an education, or takes out a life insurance policy, or has a family, is counting on this country' existing and developing for thirty years and many more. Furthermore, a goal- of this kind might we become an incentive to work harder and to struggle more to keep this country peaceful, vigorous and true to its highest ideals.

It will be a hard fight, but the goal is a worthy one. Is it too much to ask everyone to dream of what it would be like to drive from coast to coast along highways everywhere beautiful, always varied; to take the family for a picnic, not where there used to be a beautiful grove, but where there is one; to hike along trails through forests and up mountains unscarred by slash, fire, or unsightly building; to be able to take a boat ride in any of the streams, lakes or bays of America and find them clean; be able to discover in their proper habitats one's favorite birds, mammals and plants to live always in the beautiful, inspiring surrounding that this country's superb natural heritage makes possible!

Let us, the people of the United States, work to accomplish all of these programs, that all the land may be beautiful; that it may stand, from coast to coast an from border to border, as the most fititng memorial to the two hundredth anniversary of the United States of America.
