While shopping on the island, look out for the rare blue gem called Larimar which is unique to the Dominican Republic. The island also has amber mines and harvests coffee beans, so you can take a variety of different local produce with you as a reminder.

The capital of the Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo is full of historic buildings like the colonial ones found in “Zona Colonial”. These date from the 1600s when the island was under spanish rule.

Food in the Dominican Republic is an unusual combination of Spanish and African influenced cooking. Various different local dishes are available; a common meal is rice with meat and fried plantain.
