Az Mixtapes-the Early Years
AZ first came to the attention of industry professionals when he appeared on the 1994 Nas album Illmatic. He was on the tracks Life’s A Bitch and The Genesis, which were both successful singles. He was the only guest artist on the entire album, so he was able to stand out and make an impression on people in the hip hop world. After releasing a few tapes, the rapper was signed to EMI and released his debut album, Doe or Die, in 1995. The album was a huge hit with the critics but it, unfortunately, did not achieve an impressive number when it came to sales. His biggest single was the song Sugar Hill, which reached gold status and got to number 25 on the Billboard charts. After releasing his debut album, AZ joined the group The Firm with artists Nas, Nature and Foxy Brown. They released one album, which was called The Album before disbanding. Although working with The Firm did not give his career the jump he hoped for, AZ had the chance to work with producers such as Dr. Dre and Trackmasters. AZ mixtapes helped the rapper keep his name and image in the minds of industry professionals, even when his debut album was not selling well. He did not let poor record sales deter him from pursuing his solo career as an artist. That perseverance is what allowed him to continue in the industry and develop his career.
