About Shoes

Mankind's first shoes were simply strips of leather binding the feet and tied with thongs. This allowed hunters to run further - and over rougher terrain - after their prey without injury. It also enabled them to go out in the snow and ice without suffering frostbite to their feet. In hotter countries, sandals were soon invented to protect the feet. The first shoes were made on straight lasts. That is, there were no right or left feet. They must have been extremely uncomfortable.

Once machines were invented that could vulcanise rubber to cloth or other materials, shoes like sneakers were well on their way. Their name was coined because these were the first shoes that didn't make a noise like leather-soled shoes do. Rubber soles then became popular on leather shoes due to their longwearing properties.

Shoes are still about foot protection, but these days fashion often dictates the style. Many shoes - especially dress shoes - still have leather soles today. However, styles now tend to reflect an ergonomic design that is far more comfortable to the wearer. So while stiletto heel and pointy toe shoes will probably always be with us, at least the wearer now has a choice.
