The bottom line - independent abstractors and title examiners are losing clients left and right as title companies and settlement service companies go out of business. Where one abstractor might reasonably complete 10 refinance searches a day, my peers are admitting to 50-75 percent reduction in volume.
In an industry that is already cutthroat to begin with, we need to more resources to find new clients. Getting on every free list out there is great, but waiting for the clients to call us could be professional suicide. Instead, we have to be willing to pay for client lists or databases that have clients in them...places where we can find addresses and phone numbers to contact for new business.
Is it fun? No, neither is considering working for someone else after a successful career as an independent title examiner. It is easy to call and solicit for work - I wish it was...but if I can make 100 calls and get one client with one new search a day, then it was worth it. If had stopped at the 10th or 50th call, because it seemed hopeless, well, it would have been.
For now, gone are the days where we could call up a settlement company and get orders the same day. However, word is that credit markets are going to open up again, and for the forty million good home loans out there, a healthy percentage will need refi or purchase work done. THERE is our market, and NOW is the opportunity to get your name out there.
Line up your clients now, before we get so busy again we think the hard times are over. Invest, even 2 dollars a month in your business and you will find it keeps food on your table and your children in warm winter clothes for years to come.
