Achieve Your Goal, Get Help
Do you really know how to achieve your goal? Is this something you’ve succeeded at before, or is it new to you? I’m going to assume that you are starting a new path. You are going to achieve something you’ve never done before. If that’s the case, you are not the smartest person around about how to do it. That’s not to say you’re not intelligent. You could be the most intelligent person in town, but if you’ve never sailed a boat you shouldn’t just start a solo voyage across the Atlantic! If you really want to increase your chance of success, you need to get advice from someone who’s already done what you’re going to do. Who do you know that’s done it? No one? Then you have the opportunity to get to know someone new. Does that make you uncomfortable? Probably. That’s what change does. Most people who have succeeded at something are more than willing to talk about it. If you identify someone like that, contact them. Tell them you understand that they have been successful and that you’re interested in achieving something similar. The odds are they will feel very complimented and will give you some time to learn from their experiences. You might even find someone who would be willing to be your mentor! So that’s the first way to get some help; what’s the second? It is to find someone, often a friend or family member, who will encourage you along the way. In the process of pursuing your goal, you will probably run into some challenges. If you are totally on your own, these challenges could discourage you. This could cause you to lose focus and eventually fall off the path you’ve set for yourself. You will need encouragement. A word of caution is in order here. Be careful in choosing your encourager. The world is full of negative, and people often are too quick to say “No, you can’t do that.” You want to share your goals with people who have a positive mind set. Your encourager must be someone who really wants to see you succeed. This person will build you up, not tear you down. I know you’ve known both types of people; be aware of that as you share your dreams and goals. Then, when you find your encouragers, you want to become an encourager to them too. So the help represented by the letter H is going to come two ways. First, you’re going to get help from someone who’s already done something similar to what you’re going to do. This person can help you set the right action plan and perhaps be a mentor. Second, you’re going to find encouragers who will share the joys of your successes and help lift you up when you run into challenges. You are on your way!
