Acne is a skin disorder that most affects teenagers or youngsters in early twenties. The most important reason for this is the surge in male sex hormones, which is a natural process. It usually affects the face and upper neck and occurs in the form of pimples, blemishes, spots, zits or lesions. Almost 90% adolescent population suffers from some form of acne.
However, apart from hormonal changes, acne can also occur due to other reasons like:
• Genetic history
• Due to increase in stress, the adrenal (stress) glands increase secretion of hormones causing acne.
• Accumulation of dead skin cells.
• Bacteria present in the pores of the skin.
• Exposure to halogens.
• Using anabolic steroids.
These are some of the other primary reasons for acne among youngsters. However, it can be easily eliminated with the help of few simple remedies.
Acne Remedies
Several dermatologists have suggested some fundamental remedies as a part of acne advice. Some of them are as follows:
1. The most common solution for acne is benzoyl peroxide. Many dermatologists prescribe bactericidal products that comprise of benzoyl peroxide to treat acne. There are creams and gels, which must be applied at least twice daily to get rid of acne. These creams successfully remove lesions, pimples and blemishes within a few weeks.
2. Apart from benzoyl peroxide, experts also prescribe creams comprising anti bacterials like triclosan and chlorhexidine gluconate.
3. There are even antibiotic acne creams available to eliminate the bacteria that cause acne. These bacteria are present in the follicles that get blocked due to dead skin cells. Thus, the creams effectively remove the bacteria and clean the follicles which in turn eliminate acne. The commonly used antibiotics include erythromycin, clindamycin, azelaic acid and tetracycline.
4. Apart from these antibiotic creams used externally, there are even anti-acne antibiotic tablets available for consumption.
5. Hormonal treatment is another way of treating acne. It is usually prescribed for women wherein a large pimple can be flattened with an injection of cortisone. This injection is directly inserted in the pimple to remove it. However, often it can leave a temporary white mark or depression at the spot.
6. Apart from these medicinal treatments, there are other simpler means to keep the skin free from acne. They include having a balanced diet, regular exercise, adequate sleep, avoiding junk food and washing the face regularly with clean water. It is recommended to wash the face with warm water and a good face wash early in the morning and before going to bed at night.
Acne though is a very minor skin ailment can sometimes have a negative psychological impact on youngsters. Thus, it is important to treat the disease immediately to avoid emotional disturbance.
