Acne Myths - Fact From Fiction

A Look at Acne Myths

It seems as if there are many myths and misconceptions about acne. It is important to toss aside some of these myths in order to better understand and deal with an acne condition.

Some people believe that acne is only really seen in adolescents and teenagers. This is not true. It is not uncommon for individuals to face acne well into their 20’s. People who are in their 30’s or 40’s can see a return of acne or can even be presented with the condition for the first time. Individuals who are even older than that can be afflicted with acne as well.

It does not mean that you do not keep your face and skin clean if you have acne. In fact, cleanliness or dirt has nothing to do with acne. Acne develops as pores fill up with bacteria regardless of how often you clean your face. You might clean your face very well and be afflicted with acne while someone else might be less diligent about their hygiene and not suffer acne at all.

There is such a thing as cleaning your face too much. You can actually aggravate an acne condition if you wash your face more than a couple times each day. Too much washing can dry out and irritate your skin. You do not want to wash your face with harsh soaps or with harsh cleansing movements. It is better to gently wash your face with a mild cleanser in the morning and at night. You should also rinse your face if you find that you are overly sweaty throughout the day.

What you eat does not directly cause your face to breakout with acne. Eating a chocolate bar or drinking a soda will not result in acne. However, eating a well balanced diet with plenty of healthy vitamins and nutrients can be used to help prevent acne or to keep acne from getting worse.

Some people are under the misconception that acne is not really a medical condition. They believe it should be treatable without ever consulting a doctor. However, acne is a medical condition though it is mild for many people. In some cases acne does go away with some simple steps. There are people who notice that acne disappears with little or no intervention. However, it is sometimes necessary to talk to your doctor for some help to fight your acne condition.

Popping your pimples will not make things better. In fact, popping your pimples can spread the bacteria and make things worse. You also increase your risk of scarring when you pop your pimples. You might feel as if you must pop those zits but you need to work at avoiding the temptation.

Many people suffer or have suffered from acne. It is nothing to be embarrassed about or ashamed of. Even if you suffer from severe acne, you should not despair. In time you will find the best way to treat your condition.
