Acne Skin Care Treatments That Work

For most of us that take pride in the way we look, the thought of suffering with acne or Zits, may at first seem awful; fortunately, the problems it causes are being investigated. The number of people afflicted around the world is huge so science research is making advances; in fact many new remedies are proving very effective. We can classify acne skin care products into 3 broad categories:

1. Preventive
2. Internet or Drugstore: Treatment to help relieve the condition
3. Prescription: Dermatologist or Doctor, specialist cream or ointment

General or preventative products form part of a large skin care market, they deal with skin creams, lotions and cleansers that can help to stop acne. We should all use products like this to maintain our skin and prevent future problems from occurring.

There are acne skin care products that are more specialized in there approach and are formulated to reduce and limit the amount of oil in the pores of our skin. These types of products are reducing the chance of oil staying in the pores and aiding the growth of harmful bacteria which assists the formation of the skin condition.

Other skin care treatments can help exfoliate the skin and are easily obtainable in any drug store. These work towards removing dead skin cells, reducing the possibility of pore-clogging and bacteria development.

Many other acne skin care products have become available over the counter and on the internet; they don't usually require a prescription. These include products like vanishing creams which extract the excess oil from the skin. Most of these are based on benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid, both of which are the enemies of bacteria (and hence acne).

Generally it is best to start using this type of product with only a small amount of benzoyl peroxide; in fact no more than 5.5 percent is recommended just to see how the skin reacts. There are alternatives to this including products which contain alpha hydroxy acid. You might have to try a few different creams or lotions before you find the acne skin care product that is effective for you're skin. If nothing you try seems to work, you should contact a dermatologist.

On-prescription treatments are prescribed by a dermatologist and can include ointments that can be applied on the affected area or oral antibiotics or just any topical ointment. In more serious cases your skin care specialist may decide that a small surgical procedure can be used to remove the oil and infection from your pores. You are warned never to attempt this yourself as it could lead to serious skin problems.

An alternative that has been shown to work well is hormone therapy. Studies have shown that hormones can cause acne and skin care treatments that are hormone based have proved to be effective in many cases. Constant research has paid off, and whilst they cannot cure the condition, it is becoming easier to treat.
