One of the most commonly heard excuses as to why women do not participate in a weight training program is the fear that they will add muscular bulk to their physique. Not wanting to look like a professional wrestler is not unreasonable, however not adding strength training to a work out plan is.

Women should use free weight to strength train in conjunction with regular aerobic exercise. Doing so will help to build strong and healthy bones to prevent the chances of osteoporosis with age. Osteoporosis is a serious condition that effects many women and results in fragile and brittle bones.

Women should also strength train to increase lean muscle mass. Increasing lean muscle mass is a vital part of the fat burning equation. The more lean mass a women has, the greater the ability to burn calories when they are at rest. This will help keep off pounds as age progresses.

It is easy to get started in a strength training program without adding bulk. It is important to remember the following tips.

1. Do not over exert your body. Do not try to lift more weight than is comfortable. Lifting weight anywhere from 1-8 pounds in sufficient. Make sure though that the weight is not too light. The perfect weight to lift is a weight that will difficult towards the last 2 or 3 reps in a set. Do not try to exercise with a weight that puts strain on the body.

2. Recover from a strength training session with a post work out whey protein shake. The quickest way to rebuild and repair muscles is to replenish the muscles with energy. A whey protein shake offers the quickest source of energy as well as other vital nutrients for muscle repair.

3. Study proper form and exercises. Technique is critical to the success of a regime. While a personal trainer may be unaffordable all the time, paying to seek the advice of a trainer for one or two sessions is worth it, as the advice that they provide will help you achieve the fastest results.
