When you consider building an addition onto an existing home, you are going to need some electrical work done. Keep in mind that the building codes have come a long way since your home was built and what you have for wiring now, might need to be different in the new addition. You will need to find out as much as you can about building codes before you begin your project. You’ll also need to know where you want your receptacles placed in addition to knowing what type of receptacles you need. By sinks and tubs, or any other water source, you need a GFCI protected receptacle. If you are unfamiliar with this type of receptacle, you need to learn more or hire a professional electrician.

If you are adding outside outlets, they have the same requirements, as do outlets for air conditioning units and pool outlets. GFCI outlets shut-off electricity to the outlet when tripped for any reason. This prevents electrical shock. Keep in mind that installing different types of receptacles requires different installation processes. Not every receptacle is the same; therefore, they are installed differently. Light fixtures also have different installation needs. If you have ceiling fans, dimmer lights or recessed lighting, you need to know what to do. If you need help with the wiring, call an electrician.

Electricians are trained in wiring and how to hook up the proper receptacles and where they belong. If you do the work yourself, you might not have things done according to code. This can cause problems when the building inspector inspects your new addition. After all wiring is installed, the inspector will need to inspect everything before work can continue. If by chance something is wrong, you have to fix it before receiving the go ahead to complete the addition to your home. It is always better to hire a professional electric contractor and save yourself both time and money.
