"adeus, Pai" Starring Jose Afonso Pimentel
There are many bitter-sweet moments as Filipe finds the true answers to all the questions he has had bottled up for the last thirteen years: How did his parents meet? Why has his father never spent any time with him? Why did his grandfather kill himself? The answers he gets saddens him, yet also brings him relief. His father at first tries to show his son that he is a good father by taking him to do all the things they have never done together, such as teaching him to fish, but it is soon revealed that he has no clue what he is doing. Filipe, the loving son, lets him know he doesn't have to pretend to know how to do certain things in order to spend time with him. Filipe soon meets a girl that he falls in love with. That, along with the girl's 14 year old brother teaching him about sex, leads Filipe to begin questioning his father about all the things he doesn't understand about sex, including asking about his parents' own lovemaking; much to his father's consternation. This is a superb movie about a somewhat estranged father/son relationship that seems to have finally found a solution. Pimentel does a tremendous job portraying the devoted if ignored son. His depiction of naivety and ignorance is completely believable and wonderfully done.
