Adsense : A Guide To Getting Started

Google Adsense is an amazing source of revenue for advertisers and publishers of websites. It is the advertising side of Google Adwords which are those little blocks of classified ads you see at the top and far right of Google’s screen when you type certain keywords in their search engine. The advertiser pays Google every time the ad is clicked on and it can be a very productive way of promoting products.

Any web publisher with an approved site can boost their income by adding Adsense adverts. The adverts work by reading the content of the site they are placed on and displaying relevant adverts to match the sites content. When the ad is clicked on the publisher receives a percentage of the fee. The amount earned per click varies from ad to ad from around 5 cents up to 100 dollars, but you can’t choose which ads are featured on your site and Google doesn’t publish the value of the ad clicks.

To become an Adsense user you first have to create a quality website, you need to have good content (at least five pages), purpose and include some other advertising such as affiliate links. Google do not like sites whose only aim is to make money from Adsense. When you have one site approved you are allowed to add Adsense to as many sites as you like as long as you abide by Google’s rule. Read there terms and conditions carefully before submitting your site for approval. As a general rule you should

Avoid putting Adsense ad in pop-ups
Not force clicks on Adsense ads
Not use generated pages.

The main 3 things you need to concentrate on when creating a website for Adsense are keywords, content and linking:

Keywords
There are several tools available online for helping to select keywords; Google keyword selection tool, Wordtracker, and Overture are some popular examples. It is important to find the most popularly searched keywords and keyword phrases and make your website keyword rich. Try to get your selected keywords near the top of your pages, including the headings, titles and page descriptions.

Content
There are many way to add content to your site, the most common way for an Adsense site is to use articles. It is best if you can write them yourself and make them original because search engines will prefer it but you can download other people’s articles to use on your site or get other people to write them for you for a fee. Sites like elance.com will do this for you. When you have about 10 keyword rich articles ready you can make them into a website, one article per page and you will be ready to submit to Google for Adsense approval.

Linking
Linking is probably the most important part of this process, the more links you have to your website the better it will perform in search engines. There are several ways you can go about this but the easiest one, assuming you have created your website using articles, is to submit those articles to many different free article directories on the internet. Each article you submit will include a resource box at the bottom which will have details about you and a link to your website. If you have 10 articles you can quickly and easily submit each one to 10 directories giving you 100 almost instant links. Keep creating articles and add to more directories to gain more links.

Participating in Forums related to your subject is also a good way to gain links as you can leave a link to your site in the signature box.

When you have you website approved by Adsense and some links in place you need to decide how to display your Adsense ads on the site. There are some good tips on the Adsense site about the best places to position ads and what colours to use. Generally banners and skyscraper ads don’t work. The best results seem to come from ads in the top left of the content part of the page in a colour that blends with the background.

When you start to get visitors to your site you can keep track of how the different ads are performing, Google provide various tracking tools to help you determine the best positions, sizes and colours of ads so you can optimise your sites profitability.
